I conduct research that has demonstrable "real world" impact. Consequently, I have submitted an Impact Case Study for REF2014 based on research into employment relations in the civil aviation industry and for REF 2021 based on research into working conditions in the fitness industry (respectively). Findings of a 2009 report I co-authored with Peter Turnbull into the impact of the financial crisis on civil aviation form the basis of recommendations made by the International Labour Organisation for responses to the Covid-19 pandemic.
I have written numerous reports for national organisations such as the British Air Line Pilots Association (2003) and international organisations such as the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF) (2012 and 2014), International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) (2002, 2010 and 2013) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) (2001 and 2009). I was involved in the study of the impact of the COVID19 pandemic on air navigation service provision and co-authored the report, Navigating the COVID-19 Crisis: Air Traffic Charging Models and Financing of Air navigation Service Providers, published in 2022. In 2024, Peter Turnbull (University of Bristol) and I launched the inaugural View from the Flight Deck survey in collaboration with the International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Associations.
I have been a member of the Global Airline Industry Programme (based at MIT) and the International Consortium of Airline Research in Organisation Studies. My research has been submitted to the UK government's Department for Transport and Work and Pensions Committee. I have presented my research at a variety of practitioner conferences and national/international government bodies such as European Commission Civil Aviation Sector Social Dialogue committee meeting in June 2012, the European Parliament in April 2014 and the Netherlands Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment in October 2015. I was employment relations expert panel member of the closing debate at the European Aviation Conference in Dublin (November 2017).
